Usually retailing with a hefty price tag that can go as high as $800 USD, HTC has massively discounted the VIVE system by $200, bringing the cost of the system down to $599. VIVE Price Cut – Good News for Consumers<\/h2>\n

While for many a $599 price tag is still somewhat hefty, VIVE US general manager Dan O’Brien has promised that the current generation VIVE won’t be disappearing anytime soon. They expect the current version of the VIVE to still be on the market well into 2018, so consumers don’t have to worry that the price drop is about getting rid of stock and that they’ll be left with a useless device in a short period. And with a plethora of accessories, like wireless adapters, head straps, and others, users will be able to upgrade without feeling like they’re being upsold into new hardware. To date, HTC has worked on improving the current hardware, for example they’ve upgraded the VIVE’s cable system, without requiring a new generation of hardware, and O’Brien notes that it’s this kind of iterative design that will probably continue for some time.<\/p>\n

While the new, discounted price is good news for many it won’t affect the VIVE special Business Edition<\/a> package, which is aimed primarily at commercial enterprises and arcades. At $1200 USD O’Brien says that these special commercial editions only make up a minority of the VIVE sales, but of course they’re still an essential and substantial part of the HTC business plan, especially in China where HTC estimates that there’s a VIVE in up to 70% of the 4500 arcades across the country.<\/p>\n
